The response from Bonitas and the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) to last week’s column has done little to dispel the growing sense of unease around governance at SA’s second-largest medical scheme (“Bonitas: the real anatomy of a scandal is lack of competition (https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/opinion/2024-10-18-mfana-maswanganyi-and-michael-willie-bonitas-the-real-anatomy-of-a-scandal-is-lack-of-competition/)”, October 18). Methinks they doth protest too much. 

Both Bonitas and the CMS have failed to address key allegations that go beyond routine procedural justifications and tick-box governance claims. What’s emerging is a picture of a system where back-room dealings, shadowy figures and dubious decisions appear to undermine the fiduciary duties trustees are supposed to uphold for their 400,000 principal members. ..
