In a world where good money is forever being thrown after bad; in a world of scarcity and venality, of private interests trumping public good, of misspending and neglect, of scheming and pettiness, of fearmongering and the protection of privilege — a world, in short, that should logically bring about its own end through extreme inequality, warfare and climate catastrophe — one learns to lower one’s expectations. ..
