Extensive work has been done in the vineyards and the new winemaker is a dab hand in the cellar
If you drive from Cape Town to Stellenbosch along the N2 and then onto Baden Powell Drive, the first wine estate you encounter just after leaving the highway is Vergenoegd-Löw. The property has a unique terroir — not just in the way that every wine farm differs from every other wine farm at least in degrees of nuance.
Positioned almost at the mouth of the Eersterivier and so close to the coast that some of the low-lying pastures are actually tidal, it has soils infused with maritime fossils quite unlike any other in the entire appellation. Whereas most of Stellenbosch has excessively acidic soils requiring huge additions of lime, Vergenoegd-Löw’s are naturally more alkaline...
