It’s great to see three of the four local franchises in the United Rugby Championship (URC) in the top part of the log and on the cusp of qualifying for Europe next year, but some fundamental changes to the structure and operations of SA rugby may be necessary if they are to compete.            

A change to the salary cap, currently R60m per franchise, would be a good start as that would make it possible for local franchises who have equity partners with deep pockets to retain star players. But even more crucial to the chances of teams being successful in both the URC and the Champions Cup might be the withdrawal of the four URC franchises from the Currie Cup...
