We are several weeks into England’s second national lockdown, with restrictions set to continue at least into the second half of 2021. That means more government spending will be necessary to prevent further economic losses.

With the commencement of the lockdown on November 2, UK chancellor Rishi Sunak extended the furlough scheme until the end of March 2021. This means the government will continue to prop up the wages of eligible employees up to 80% of their salaries. This is on top of the furlough support the government has been providing employers since March 2020.  ..
