So, a big few days for President Cyril Ramaphosa. He has addressed the nation on our response to a slight rise in Covid infections. He has a major investment conference coming up next week, where he will struggle to hold on to pledges already made, let alone attract new promises. Local government by-elections this week will test his political standing in the wake of the first lockdowns and the appearance in court, charged with corruption, of ANC secretary general Ace Magashule, will set him into a quiet fury of political calculation.

Ramaphosa is often slow to act but he calculates the politics of everything all the time. He wants a second term and the arrest of his arch opponent inside the ANC and its command structure is a key moment. Does he manoeuvre Magashule out of his position while he is a formally accused person?..
