My late paternal grandmother was Scottish. Last week I visited the country, and her place of birth, for the first time. I have never really identified with my Scottish ancestry. Both my parents grew up in SA and for generations their families have mostly called the country home.
While I was growing up, my perception of the UK, which I visited for the first time only in 2016, was shaped largely by books and films about London, high school history lessons and pop icons such as The Beatles, Spice Girls and Oasis. My understanding of Scotland has therefore been limited to names of cities and superb whiskies, and imagery of kilts, bagpipes and salmon fishing...
