South Africans love a trashy reality television show. Mzansi Magic has used the medium to set Twitter on fire with their relatable and often drama-filled shows, and this past weekend’s Date My Family episode was no different. In what has been billed as “the worst episode of all time”, bachelor Jongikhaya, who first presented as an ordinary “nice guy” from Hillbrow, morphed into a controlling psychopath before viewers’ eyes. On the date he asserted that a woman must be a mzalwane (born-again Christian) and dutifully “obey his commands”. He “will not argue with a woman who is supposed to be quiet” because she is not allowed to speak her mind in his house — or drink or smoke, for that matter. “A woman will never be a man in my house,” he says, as he feels he is all the man the house needs.
