On the front page of Thursday’s French sports daily L’Equipe, the headline proclaimed "Le Nouveau Monde" ("The New World"). Chris Froome, the defending champion, had faltered with five days to go at the Tour de France. His teammate, Geraint Thomas, had not. The world was about to change. The procession they had predicted would not happen. There would be no fifth win at the Tour for Froome. But there is the very real chance of a win for Thomas, who, in his laconic way, was quoted as saying: "Je suis bien place" — he is well placed. That’s putting it mildly. But Thomas is not one for exaggeration. He is no braggart. He is, as Matthew Syed wrote in The Times of London on Thursday, "very different from the monomaniacal caricature of the grand-tour rider. He is bright, personable and funny." And now the man who began his Tour de France career with Barloworld, the South African-sponsored team, is the unexpected champion-elect. But this is the Tour.
