KEVIN McCALLUM: World Cup cameraman Cortez helps us keep it all in perspective
Yuri Cortez may have shot many better photographs at this World Cup, but he will not have captured many more exclusive than the one he got in Moscow in the semifinal between England and Croatia.Cortez, a photographer for AFP, was the man at the bottom of the pile-on celebrations after Mario Mandzukic scored what would be the winning goal.Knocked over, lying on the ground, Cortez never stopped shooting. He kept Mandzukic’s face in focus, as the Croatian striker was mobbed by his teammates. Cortez got the pictures. He was helped to his feet by defender Domagoj Vida, the owner of the worst haircut at the tournament, and given a slobbery kiss to say sorry. Cortez grinned, took a few more pictures and grinned some more.Cortez is the AFP’s chief photographer in their Mexico City bureau. Football is not life and death.
