The political fiasco unfolding in North West is a reminder of why South Africans need an early election to renew, or not, the mandate of their rulers and free themselves from the machinations of the governing ANC. As a principle, this columnist has taken a view to defer judgment on Cyril Ramaphosa’s presidency until he marks his 200th day in office. However, to refresh readers’ minds: North West, a part of the so-called premier league — a club of provincial ANC chairmen mostly aligned to the ousted president — has gone up in flames. Protesters — mostly ordinary people, disgruntled ANC, South African Communist Party and Cosatu members — are demanding service delivery and the removal of Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
