You do not need to be a nuclear physicist to work out that the despicable acts of violence and mayhem that swept through Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night were a long time coming and could have been avoided. The glowing embers of discontent had been unmistakable in stadiums around the country whenever Kaizer Motaung’s ailing Kaizer Chiefs played and it was only a matter of time before they blew into a raging bushfire. And that day finally came in Durban on Saturday when incensed Chiefs fans stormed the field, assaulted security stewards and rival fans, started fires and destroyed chairs after Free State Stars had the temerity to beat the limping Naturena club 2-0 in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup. A South African Police Service (SAPS) Inyala armoured vehicle drove onto the pitch and officers had to use teargas and stun grenades to disperse an angry mob that had proceeded to wilfully destroy SuperSport and SABC television equipment.
