I have been spending a lot of time with people much older than myself these past few months. I’ve met people who stood on the commanding heights of this economy, in mining and manufacturing. They must, I’m sure, be hideously wealthy. Mostly though, they’re entertaining, deeply knowledgeable and experienced. And, astonishingly, they still live in Johannesburg. Heaven knows, they could enjoy lives of plenty wherever they were. They choose here and, sadly, remain an immense resource of experience and memory largely untapped and unused. I’ve often thought that if Julius Malema were able to get some retired older (white, obviously — these people have been out of their jobs for 20 years now at least) former CEO to quietly tutor or mentor him from time to time he would come up with answers to problems he hasn’t even thought of yet.
