PETER BRUCE: The Times, they are predictably changing
On Friday, The Times appears in print for the last time since its launch in June 2007. It is a sad moment in any democracy when a newspaper closes but for me, it leaves mixed emotions. I was editor of Business Day when it launched and it cost us. The Times and I have history. The Times has been great. It has had good, strong and spirited editors. My favourite front-page headline is from The Times; the day it ran a series of pictures of President Jacob Zuma laughing and pushing up his spectacles in Parliament as MPs tried to nail him down on Nkandla. "What’s so funny?" screamed the headline above the photos. Its columnists have been terrific. It revived Darrel Bristow-Bovey, gave real estate to giants of our media such as Justice Malala and Jonathan Jansen, and reinvented a cricket writer, Tom Eaton, as one of our most acute public commentators.
