We’ve seen this before. The problems of Egypt were blamed on one man — Hosni Mubarak. Now one man, Robert Mugabe, is to blame for the misrule of Zanu-PF. Fortunately, all is not lost for Mugabe. In the attempt to explain his role in the deferment of Zimbabwe’s dreams of freedom, democracy and prosperity, two culprits have been identified: Lady Macbeth and age. Like Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Mugabe has no sense of agency. But he must count his blessings because Macbeth was the victim of manipulation by four women — the three witches and Lady Macbeth. Macbeth himself had neither the desire, the gumption nor the ambition to be king. Similarly, Mugabe had neither the desire, gumption nor the ambition to be an oppressor and Zimbabwe’s president for life.
