There is much to like about Nathan Lyon. He looks a little awkward, having given up the battle of the follicle and having a face that needs some getting used to. He is no glamour kid, full of flash and bull. He was a horticulture apprentice who rose to the top of Test cricket, an underrated spinner and match-winner who could be the difference in this Ashes series. He does not seem much of a sledger, which he became this week, when he took on the role of chief trash talker before the first match in Brisbane that started in the wee hours of Thursday on SuperSport. He slagged off Joe Root, then Matt Prior, who retired four years ago, suggesting he had been scared. It seemed out of character. Like he had won the short straw and been rolled out by the Australian media as the man to ramp up the war of words. It felt like he had been coached in what to say, told how to push buttons.
