The announcement that World Rugby’s technical review board had recommended SA as host of the 2023 Rugby World Cup was welcomed in the Guardian comments section by one Pete Frost for these three reasons: "Durban poison, Swazi red, and if you’re really lucky, Malawi cob. Nuff said." Sadly, for Mr Frost, you can be pretty sure that the standard of South African weed was one selling point left out of the South African Rugby Union’s (Saru’s) bid document to World Rugby, although it seems that many Irish rugby fans believe World Rugby was smoking something when they put them last of the three nations. SA and Saru took some heat for winning a transparent process. There were some unhappy folks around.SA has not helped itself this year. The T20 Global League was over before it began. The farce of the Durban 2022 Commonwealth Games, when SA won a bid contested by just one country, and then lost it, was a bad joke.
