In December, most of us believe, the uncertainty will be over and we will know where the ANC and the country are headed. But most of us may be wrong: there are growing signs that the battle inside the party may be with us for years. Some commentators believe the December battle between the ANC faction that supports President Jacob Zuma and its opponents will shape SA’s future. But the great moment of truth seems less likely every day. There are pressures within the ANC to prevent a contest, prompting a meeting among provincial leaderships in Mpumalanga last weekend. Unless a contest is averted, it is hard to see how the ANC can hold a conference. So, those who look to ANC politics to shape where the country is going may need to look elsewhere.
