Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has had two important ethical tests in the past three weeks: one he passed with distinction, although it was only on the second opportunity; the second he failed dismally. The first concerned a member of Mashaba’s political executive in the city. Sharon Peetz was member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for economic development. She was also a long-standing friend and business associate of Mashaba before they worked together on the council. Peetz was responsible for overseeing the marketing of Johannesburg as a destination for business and tourism. One of the first things she did on coming into office was to arrange a trip to Spain to attend a well-known global events conference in Barcelona. Not being too familiar with ethics, Peetz took her mother with her. Mashaba was given a report on the matter in March and asked Peetz to explain.
