Twitter science — the collective wisdom that is online convention — would have it that Jacob Zuma is a boon for the Democratic Alliance. He is a one-man vote-losing machine, the theory goes. The more embroiled in controversy he becomes, the greater his hold over the ANC and the longer he stays on as president in the face of it all, the better for the official opposition. It is difficult to assess this without proper market research, but even without it it seems incontrovertible that support for the ANC is declining under Zuma and much of that can be attributed to him in turn. Certainly, what evidence there is suggests Zuma in particular is a problem for the ANC. Ipsos, in conjunction with eNCA, released the results of a survey this week (Majority of ANC members say Zuma must resign) that found more than half (54%) of those polled, and who identified as ANC supporters, thought he should resign.
