One presumes Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, as he finally begins to pop up at large meetings, is paying for his own ANC presidential campaign. His opponent, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, is having hers paid for by you and me, as the presidential protection service, the Nkandla compound and, presumably, transport and other assistance is covered either by the state or the Gupta family. Cyril, you could argue, can afford it. I am not so sure. Someone saw an advert in the Farmers Weekly recently for an auction of some of his cattle that, given where we are, is a pretty authentic way of financing anything. I have never thought Cyril is as rich as people think. He may have much more debt than people think. Or maybe he could be "smart" like Donald Trump says he is. Trump lent his campaign money and his campaign must now pay him back. I wonder how that works, especially given that he won?
