It is heartening to see that South Africans are rallying in solidarity, taking confidence from the outpouring of disapproval of President Jacob Zuma and from copious clouds of dagga smoke rising from backyards across the land, but before we get carried away, this we have to acknowledge: the country has been saved by the death of struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada. Were it not for the untimely passing of this great South African, Zuma would have played his cards sooner and would have had a relatively freer hand in deploying the worst Cabinet SA has had to endure since 1994, even if that was off a truly low base. Instead, Kathrada spoke from the grave when former president Kgalema Motlanthe read his admonition to Zuma at his funeral.Now the entire country is rallying behind the values expressed by the departed greats of SA’s liberation, Kathrada and former president Nelson Mandela.
