The dawn of the Trump era is an exhilarating moment in global politics. Not so much because most of us revel in drama since it gives us something to talk about, but because it raises questions about the things we thought we knew. Someone recently argued that leaders such as US President Donald Trump are testament to the limits of democracy. By this they mean, I assume, that democracy does not always bring about the best leaders or social outcomes. This is an assertion, especially in this example, that I would disagree with based on very rudimental knowledge of the theory of democracy. But I come from that primary school system that was based on recitation. We from that world find it hard to discard the constant definitions that ring in our minds as we hear the teacher shouting, “Again!” Memory was supreme; conceptual understanding was not exactly a priority. And as it went, “Democracy is a government of the people, by the people, for the people”. I suspect that this was a definition...
