Davos (Monday) — This is what in the newspaper trade is called a "dateline", and journalists around the world have had great fun over the years trying to manipulate datelines into something amusing. There was once a place called Banana somewhere on the African continent, and over the years a stream of journalists went there for the sole purpose of writing a story with the dateline Banana (Sunday) ... Trivial but true. The habit of adding the date has long since faded, but it’s interesting to remember that there was a time when stories filed for daily papers took so much time to transmit, it was necessary to including the date of writing because it might be different to the date of publication. The Davos dateline is different kettle of fish. It’s difficult to mentally merge the content of the World Economic Forum (WEF) with the utter quaintness of the surroundings.
