SA needs dynamic change, not applause for legacy politics
The legacy politics Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa represent lack solutions for today’s challenges, writes Xolisa Phillip
On a cold, dark and stormy Johannesburg evening last year, outgoing AU Commission chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma delivered the keynote address at the South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) dinner. Dlamini-Zuma landed in SA from Addis Ababa late that October evening and went straight to the shindig, where she was introduced by Sanef chairwoman Mahlatse Gallens. The country’s air was filled with #FeesMustFall tension; campuses were burning as students intensified their cry for free, decolonised higher education. The rift between the media and the government was also widening, a point highlighted by Gallens in her introduction of Dlamini-Zuma. Emboldened voices within the ANC called for President Jacob Zuma, whose term as party president comes to an end in 2017, to do the "right thing".When Dlamini-Zuma took to the podium, she was greeted by rousing applause.
