It is the time of year when I usually work myself up into a froth and announce, after much chewing of fingernails, what my car of the year has been. Every year I joke that this is the real trophy all the car manufacturers want. Forget the SA Car of the Year or CAR Magazine’s Top 12. This is the big one. Up until the last few yards of the final furlong it has been a pretty difficult process. Our market may have collapsed but, heavens, there has been some good stuff. I have loved, in no particular order, the Toyota Prius, Volkswagen Golf GTi Clubsport, the Porsche 718 Cayman S, Toyota Fortuner, Audi R8 V10, Volkswagen Passat, Opel Astra, Jaguar F-Pace and the BMW M2. That is an eclectic mix, I know. I have not driven absolutely everything. Notable for positive reviews elsewhere among the cars I missed are the AMG GT, the Volkswagen Tiguan, the new BMW 5-series and M4 GTS, and the Audi RS7, so they are removed from the running.
