Jacob Zuma’s decision to replace Nhlanhla Nene with Des van Rooyen in December 2015 wasn’t just an isolated political calamity. It provoked a skirmish between two of the great psychopathic profiles of this generation — the rural hustler and the metropolitan financier. The latter won that battle decisively, but the subsequent rage of the Zuma supporters cannot be extinguished. Throughout 2016, party officials aligned to the president alongside fringe groups have continually expressed their disgust at their chief’s hand being forced by the markets into reappointing Pravin Gordhan. In doing so, they have revealed who they truly are and what they believe.
