Does Zuma plan to benefit from expropriation without compensation turmoil?
President Jacob Zuma is playing a cynical, dangerous, and ultimately wicked game with regard to the land question
The issue of expropriation of property without compensation has suddenly been thrust into the spotlight. Although the EFF has been pushing this for some time, President Jacob Zuma has now more than once made clear statements that land will be expropriated without compensation. He has said that the government will do this, and although he once implied the Constitution allows for it, he has discussed the need for "black parties" to vote together to amend the Constitution. There has been backing from some parts of the ANC. The first important fact is that this a unilateral initiative by Zuma, with no authorisation from the ANC or from Cabinet. The second is that this is an absolute departure from ANC policy, and from a foundational principle of the Codesa negotiations and our whole constitutional dispensation. Despite the use of the term, "radical economic transformation", nothing in the ANC’s January 8 statement, or the state of the nation address made mention of this dramatic shift. ...
