A man in Florida has told a US court he stole $7bn by means of fraudulent wire transfers because "Jesus wanted him to be wealthy". The man, who was unemployed at the time and needed to pay off a debt to the federal government, reinforced his deified alibi by telling investors that his transfer scheme would allow him to "obtain the wealth that Jesus Christ created for him and belonged to him". Where to start? The Insider knows God works in mysterious ways but was not aware that His son worked in nefarious ones. The Insider also thinks that as criminal defences go, using a religious figure as your alibi is problematic because their whereabouts is notoriously difficult to pin down, as the Florida police will attest. And while Jesus may want this man to be wealthy, He surely didn’t mean $7bn wealthy. A "warm bed and a roof over his head" sort of wealthy seems more plausible.
