Management at the SABC has offered to enter into mediation on Friday to break a wage deadlock and prevent further disruptions to programming. The absence of thousands of SABC workers could affect the broadcasting of ANC elective conference, due to begin this weekend. The SABC has said it cannot afford increases as the public broadcaster battles serious financial problems‚ but workers have been angered by a R3.9m payout given to members of the interim SABC board. The strike gained traction on Thursday‚ garnering support from trade union federation Cosatu and lobby group Right2Know. The strike was initiated by the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) and the Cosatu-aligned Communication Workers’ Union (CWU).
