Maguvhe claims board was unaware of implications of protector report
SABC board chairman voted for Motsoeneng’s appointment but he was not absolutely sure why, and went on to defend the COO’s track record
Beleaguered SABC board chairman Mbulaheni Maguvhe says several board members supported the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng in 2014 as permanent chief operating officer because they were not aware that the public protector’s recommendations were binding. Maguvhe also raised eyebrows when he told MPs that he was not aware of the details of the controversial R550m deal with MultiChoice, despite the agreement having received board approval. Maguvhe appeared before a Parliamentary inquiry into the crisis at the SABC on Tuesday after being issued with a summons. Maguvhe, the last remaining nonexecutive board member, and about 17 other SABC staffers including acting CEO James Aguma and Motsoeneng, staged a dramatic walkout from Parliament last week.
