THE editor of The Star newspaper, Makhudu Sefara, has resigned, becoming the second senior editor at the Independent News & Media group to have done so in less than a week.Mr Sefara confirmed his resignation on Monday to Sapa, saying he and management would release a joint statement later on Monday.Last Thursday the editor of Durban-based newspaper The Mercury, Philani Mgwaba, tendered his resignation to take up a position with Independent’s main rival Times Media Group, which is also the owner of Business Day.Mr Mgwaba’s departure saw him being escorted out of the building by security guards — an unusual occurrence in the local newspaper industry where resignations are generally handled amicably.Unconfirmed reports on social media site Twitter were that Mr Sefara had been ordered to take over Mr Mgwaba’s position at The Mercury, but had declined to do so.In November then editor of Cape Times Alide Dasnois was given an immediate notice to vacate her position to take up the editorshi...
