Advertising doyen Schalit given award for lifetime achievement
MIKE Schalit, whose work has won 19 grands prix at South Africa’s Loeries advertising awards and three at the Cannes international creative festival, was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Financial Mail AdFocus Awards on Wednesday night.Mr Schalit, chief creative officer of BBDO SA, received the award from Financial Mail editor Tim Cohen and Michelle Meyjes, chairwoman of the AdFocus Awards jury and CEO of the MEC media group.Mr Schalit is one of the country’s most successful advertising figures of the past 25 years and has played a key part in South Africa’s recognition as, arguably, the world leader in radio advertising.However, the AdFocus award also acknowledged his role in training many of advertising’s latest generation of leading creatives, as well as his contribution to social causes.Mr Schalit is founder of The Mal Foundation, a nonprofit agency which draws on South African corporate goodwill by persuading companies to undertake projects with a benefit for...
