The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Thursday raised serious concerns that the Labour Court has only just ruled on the 2013 labour dispute between the NUM and Eskom. While pointing out that the court’s confirmation of a 5.6% final wage offer by Eskom for the 2013/4 year was doing nothing to address the huge wage gap between management and workers, the NUM said the ruling came after two subsequent rounds of wage negotiations, for 2014 and 2016. "It serves no purpose to receive the outcome of that dispute now," the NUM said in a statement. "The Labour Court ruling has been overtaken by events. This shows that wage disputes in the essential services environment are not taken seriously by the courts."
