Wage deal keeps Gautrain moving
Operator Bombela and union Untu reached agreement for an above-inflation wage hike and narrowly averted a protected strike
A strike that threatened to disrupt Gautrain services has been averted after operating company Bombela and the United National Transport Union (Untu) reached a settlement after two months of wage negotiations.The agreement was for an 8.4% salary increase, backdated to July 1, and a R100 housing allowance increase, Untu said.Untu said the Commission for Conciliation‚ Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) had issued it with a certificate of nonresolution‚ giving the union’s members the right to go on a protected strike for a 9% salary increase."After a small group of members refused the final offer by Bombela‚ the union sent a strike ballot to all its members to decide if they were prepared to go on strike for a 0.6% increase or not."The majority of the more than 50% of Untu’s members who participated in the ballot‚ decided to accept the 8.4%."The union believes 8.4% is a fair salary increase given the ongoing negative trend in SA’s economy‚" the union said.TMG Digital
