TREADMILLS can on rare occasions be dangerous, an issue highlighted by the untimely death of technology executive David Goldberg.There are about three deaths a year in the US associated with treadmills, according to data from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which tracked 30 fatalities between 2003 and 2012.The devices are also a big source of injury, accounting for an estimated 24,400 injuries treated in US hospital emergency departments during 2014, the CPSC said. That’s about 39% of all injuries related to exercise equipment last year.Patty Davis, a spokeswoman for the CPSC, said that she couldn’t break down the injuries by type, including how many were purely running related such as muscle strains.But they have piled up consistently at a rate of about 2,000 a month, with 23,900 in 2013 and 24,600 in 2012, according to the CPSC.Goldberg died on Friday after falling off a treadmill and hitting his head, according to a spokesman for the attorney-general’s office in...
