Noncommunicable diseases account for half of all deaths in SA. Cardiovascular diseases are the biggest contributor, followed by cancers, diabetes and respiratory diseases. Diabetes alone is the leading killer of women and second most common cause of death overall. The effect of noncommunicable diseases increases with age through a combination of physiological, genetic, environmental and behavioural factors.

But most deaths occur among people of working age. The number of deaths from noncommunicable diseases in people of working age are expected to increase 41% in developing economies, including SA, by 2030...
