Students have proposed a higher-education funding model that makes more money available to students in need and cuts subsidies to those who are able to fund their education themselves. Speaking to the fees commission, the Students for Law and Social Justice (SLSJ) presented a proposal for a sliding-scale model that also used increased government spending on higher education. The students called for an income-contingent loan system to be applied according to individual students’ needs and financial position, repayable when students begin earning an income. SLSJ is a grouping of students from various universities in SA that aims to transform legal education and access to justice.
