Environmental groups back in court to oppose Richards Bay gas plant
‘Substantive inadequacies’ claimed in environmental authorisations for the 400MW plant
GroundWork and the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, represented by the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), will appear in the Pretoria high court this week to present their challenge to environmental authorisations granted for a proposed gas-to-power facility in the Richards Bay industrial development zone.
The groups have asked the court to set aside an amended environmental authorisation for the Richards Bay Gas to Power 2 (RB2) power plant “in light of substantive and procedural inadequacies, including a failure to undertake the legally required climate change impact assessment”...
