Three years ago, the Supreme Court of Appeal chastised Western Cape judge president John Hlophe for appearing to act with bias in a case involving his personal lawyer. 

It said the apprehension that Hlophe had not been impartial when he gave an “untenable” ruling in favour of his lawyer’s client was “justified”. ..
