Dissension over an alleged conflict of interest by the executive secretary of the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (Casac) has resulted in the departure of its chairman, Sipho Pityana, and the former executive committee and its replacement by an interim executive committee. The interim committee appointed by the advisory council includes Paul Pretorius as chairman, Bobby Godsell, Frene Ginwala, Mukelani Dimba, Mkhuseli Jack, Tseliso Thipanyane and Pippa Green. It will prepare for the next full meeting of the council early in 2018. The organisation has been at the forefront of public-interest litigation on issues such as Nkandla and the binding nature of the findings of the public protector as well as the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. Casac has also been vocal about issues of public interest and accountability, with its executive secretary Lawson Naidoo playing a pivotal role.
