The Department of Water and Sanitation will commence with the restriction of bulk water supply to five municipalities that, to date, have failed to engage with the department or had not paid off their outstanding debts by December 8. This is according to Water and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane. Municipalities have outstanding total debt of R10.7bn for water supplies, owed to the department and to water boards. Mokonyane spoke on Wednesday at a media briefing on the agreements reached with some municipalities on the settlement of outstanding debts of more than 60 days. Notices were issued to the 30 top defaulting municipalities which had debts exceeding R50m and had outstanding debt for a period in excess of 60 days. He said bulk water supply would be restricted to municipalities that had failed to respond to these notices and had not concluded repayment plans with the department.
