Provincial education departments could have to cut spending
This is if wage negotiations between public-sector unions and the government yield a deal that breaches the allocated budget
If the wage negotiations between public-sector unions and the government yield a deal that breaches the allocated budget, provincial education departments will have to cut spending on goods and services, Basic Education director-general Mathanzima Mweli warned earlier on Thursday. "The real challenge is that if the agreement comes up with a figure that is much more than the provincial departments are able to accommodate in their budgets, which historically has happened, it would means we steal from Peter to pay Paul," he said. Provincial education departments have already determined their posts for 2018, he said at a media briefing on the work of the government’s social services cluster.
