The proposed new legislation governing political party funding has received broad support in Parliament with only the DA and EFF expressing reservations. On Thursday MPs considered the report by Parliament’s ad hoc committee on the funding of political parties. The bill includes a ban on donations from foreign sources and a requirement for parties to disclose all donations above a threshold yet to be set. It also proposes an annual ceiling of R15m per donor to prevent those with narrow political interests from influencing parties. It further provides for the establishment of two funds, to be run by the Electoral Commission of SA, for political parties. A represented parties fund will cater for political parties represented in Parliament and provincial legislatures with money appropriated by Parliament.
