South Africans would not have to wait for the governing party to self-correct if SA elected a president directly, says DA leader Mmusi Maimane. Maimane was one of the speakers at The Gathering, an event hosted by the Daily Maverick and Nando’s in Sandton, Johannesburg. The ANC has been widely criticised for not taking action against President Jacob Zuma amid a myriad of scandals that have tainted his presidency. Opposition parties, including the DA, drove a national campaign focusing strongly on Zuma last year, during the local government elections, which saw the ANC take enormous hits at the ballot box. Opposition parties are now focused on the general elections in 2019, when new national and provincial governments will be elected.
