The State Security Agency has opened a criminal case against author and investigative journalist Jacques Pauw and a former member of the agency, believed to be Paul Engelke. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation had received the docket, Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed. Its serious organised crime unit would investigate the possible leak of classified information in relation to the Intelligence Act, Mulaudzi said. The complaint stemmed from Pauw’s newly published book The President’s Keepers, he said. The book has flown off bookstore shelves since its release two weeks ago. Threats of legal action have come from the State Security Agency, the family of the agency’s director-general, Arthur Fraser, and the South African Revenue Service. Charges had been laid at the Lyttelton Police Station in Pretoria against Pauw and a former State Security Agency agent, said State Security Agency spokesman Brian Dube.
