At the time of his death, former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa was being lobbied to stand for the position of regional chairperson in his home area, which falls under the ANC’s Harry Gwala region. Magaqa, an ANC proportional representative councillor in Umzimkhulu local municipality, and his two colleagues were ambushed and shot as they returned from a political meeting in July. Umzimkhulu local municipality is one of the five municipalities under the Harry Gwala district municipality. All these municipalities are governed by the ANC and they take their instructions from ANC’s Harry Gwala regional executive committee. Magaqa had been recovering at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital when he died suddenly on Monday, apparently after suffering from stomach bug.
