The ANC’s decision to discipline its MPs who voted in favour of a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma has raised questions about whether the disciplinary process will be just and fair for all participants. Legal experts have raised constitutional issues. Complicating matters is the fact that the party’s national disciplinary committee, which is chaired by Derek Hanekom, the former tourism minister and one of the MPs accused of voting with the opposition, is composed in part of members seen as staunch Zuma defenders, such as Susan Shabangu and Lindiwe Zulu. On the other hand, the ANC’s national disciplinary committee of appeal is made up mostly of party members perceived to be critical of Zuma.
