Opposition MPs will demand the legislature launch a parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding SA’s failure to prevent Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe from leaving SA despite being the subject of an assault investigation. Mugabe allegedly assaulted a South African woman during her most recent stay in SA, but was allowed to return to Zimbabwe despite a strong push from legal organisations for her to face justice. Her lawyers instead met with South African Police Service representativse and "agreed she would co-operate". International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane inked Mugabe’s diplomatic immunity. Civil society groups have warned the latest imbroglio could become a sequel to the diplomatic disaster following SA’s failure to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes in 2015.
