Thousands of grant recipients in KwaZulu-Natal went home empty-handed when their grants were not paid at the end of July. They included child grant, disability and old-age grant recipients. Many said they had no means to buy food and other basic goods for their families who relied on the grant to live. Sassa’s provincial spokesperson, Mbizeni Mdlalose, told journalists on Monday that the agency had been urging grant recepients to present themselves at the agency’s offices and produce documents to renew their applications. "We are doing this to flush out unscrupulous people who have been defrauding us and getting grants for ghost children. We stop payment until they come to our offices to give us all relevant documents. Once that happens we pay grants within three days," he said.
